Forsyth County has taken well to this local sports bar and grill where owner Terry Hanley is almost guaranteed to welcome you every time you walk through the door. Terry Hanley got his start in the restaurant business at the young age of fifteen. In the summer of 1970, Terry’s older brother, a Vietnam Veteran, took a position as an Assistant General Manager of restaurant called the Smuggler’s Inn in San Antonio, Texas. He was having problems with his dishwasher, so he called in his little brother Terry to pick up the slack. Just like most hardworking and successful individuals in the restaurant industry, he started at the bottom and worked his way to the top!
Playing as an offensive guard for a well-known high school in San Antonio, Texas, Terry learned skills that would stick with him throughout his life. Discipline, dedication, passion, persistence, loyalty, and responsibility are all a very big part of why Terry has been successful doing what he does. He understands that it shouldn’t be all about him, and that teamwork is one of the most important things when it comes to being successful.
Throughout college Terry worked many different positions in the restaurant industry, mainly serving and bartending. After graduating, Terry took a position as an accountant, which he hated. (No offense to accountants, but a “nine to five” just doesn’t suit a restaurateur very well). Having a full time job as an accountant, Terry went to work at nights as a server to break up the monotony. After realizing Terry’s talent, his boss promoted him to assistant manager. This was the beginning of a very successful career in the hospitality industry.
Terry eventually landed a job with Fuddruckers in 1984, and moved with the San Antonio based franchise to North Georgia, where he fell in love with the area. For the next nine years, Terry would go on to help the chain open up multiple restaurants in Georgia, Alabama, Northern and Central Florida, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. At this point Terry had a taste in his mouth for owning a restaurant, and his dream would finally come true with the Black Diamond Grill, a restaurant in Cumming, Georgia. Forsyth County was the perfect place for him to make his dream a reality.
At the Black Diamond Grill, Terry realizes that it’s not all about making a living. It’s about “doing the right things.” Terry does not believe in taking shortcuts to reduce costs. Quality food and great service at an affordable price, paired with a great team, and uncompromised cleanliness is the key to running a successful restaurant. Guests will experience a true “diamond in the rough,” while dining at this family friendly and affordable restaurant.
Terry has been involved in the community ever since his arrival in 1984. Contributing around thirty five thousand dollars last year to the Hope Scholarship Foundation through the Georgia Lottery System, Terry has rooted himself into the community as a key contributor. Also Terry works with almost every school in the county. Whether he’s sponsoring baseball teams, spirit nights, honor roll students, or cookouts for the swim team, Terry can be proud of what he’s done for Forsyth County. Giving back to the community is something Terry can always be proud of. He knows that he couldn’t have done it by himself. For that, he wants to say, “Thank you!”
